Finance your stay in Germany

How to finance your stay in Germany for studies and PhD

Studies

Although students do not have to pay tuition fees in most German states, you will still need to cover your living costs (accommodation, food, health insurance etc.).
One way to do this is to get a scholarship or a place in a funding programme.
A scholarship is principally a grant paid to cover your living costs. The monthly amount varies between 800 and 1.500 Euro. The duration of such a scholarship is normally 2 to 3 years.

PhD

To finance your stay in Germany, you can apply for a paid PhD position (as a research assistant) or a PhD scholarship. A PhD scholarship is suited for individual doctorates. In a structured doctoral programme, it is very likely that you will receive a paid PhD position as a research assistant. However, this is not the case for individual doctorates: in most cases, you will have to apply for a paid doctoral position.
